TIPS FOR MOVING HOUSE
This checklist helps you to prepare for your move in a stress-free and well-planned manner.
- Think about having a garage sale to dispose of goods that won’t be needed in your new home – why pay for goods to be moved that you really don’t need
- Decrease supplies of frozen or perishable foodstuffs
- Begin collecting sturdy boxes for items you wish to pack yourself. You can clean out, sort and pack at the same time. Click here to view information on packing.
- Contact Chris Bell & Bells Moving and Storage for a quotation. Click here to arrange a quote.
- Discuss packing requirements with your removalist. Save money by packing unbreakable items. Find out what goods can be let safely in drawers.
- Plan your moving day so that you're sure of what is your responsibility and what will be your removalist's responsibility.
- Book your removalist as soon as you can and try to determine settlement dates and times
- Start making a list of essentials to carry with you on the day of the move
- Check that your large appliances and furniture will fit into your new home
- Bar-b-que bottles and mowers must be empty of gas and fuel. Check out our information page on goods not for removal
- By saving time you can save money by dismantling swings and trampolines yourself
- If you have a waterbed that needs to be moved, it should be drained and the base dismantled. Check with the manufacturer (or your removalist) for details.
- The post office for re-direction of mail
- Your Bank and other financial institutions
- The electoral Officer
- Govt Agency Departments for licence/registrations, family allowance, pensions
- Your employer
- Insurance company - life assurance, cars, home and contents

- Make sure that all items that are being repaired, or have been loaned out are collected.
- Organise to sell any furniture or possessions that you're not taking with you.
- Check your garden shed, under the house and attic to sort out what you want to take with you, and dispose of any poisons and flammable liquids.
- Return anything you have borrowed, e.g. from neighbours and public library.
- Pay any outstanding accounts.
- Cancel milk and newspaper deliveries.
- Organise final readings for your water, gas and electricity meters, and organise the disconnection of your phone.
- List the everyday items which you will need prior to, and during your move. Put these items aside so that they are not accidentally packed with your household goods.
- Arrange for an electrician to disconnect any special light fittings you are taking with you.
- Clear any overhanging bushes or shrubs near access points ready for the removalist
- Arrange for your valuables to be moved separately e.g. important legal documents, jewellery, money etc. These should not be included as part of the move.
- Drain any fuel from your lawn-mower, whipper snipper, chain saw or other machinery you may be moving.
- Ensure all jars and bottles are tightly sealed. Pack these in waterproof containers or plastic bags.
- If you are not packing for yourself decide what items you want packed together, e.g. all your linen, or children's toys, and group these items together for the removalists.
- If not moving within the same day, remove all food from your refrigerator and freezer. Defrost both compartments and wipe the interiors dry, then leave them for 24 hours to air.
- Clean out your medicine cabinet and take all unwanted drugs to your chemist for proper disposal.
- Take down any curtains or blinds you intend to take with you.
- Check all your drawers and remove any heavy items, liquids or breakables.
- To prepare your washing machine for removal, disconnect from the water supply and check with the manufacturer (or your removalist) for advice.
- Organise someone to be on hand when the removal team arrive.
- Advise the removal team what items you will need first on your arrival, so they can pack these items last for transport.
- Arrange for any small children to be kept out of the removal team's way on removal day.
- Check that nothing has been left lying around in your garden that the removalist might accidentally trip on, or might be forgotten in the move.
- Check that the gas and electrical switches are turned off, and that your phone has been disconnected.
- Make a final check of all cupboards and storage areas to ensure nothing has been left behind.
- Lock all windows and doors.
- Make sure someone can be at your premises until everything has been packed and loaded.
